Grand Market
Grand Market is a tradition in Jamaica, it provides a great holiday place for children and parents. It talks place on Christmas Eve, it features food , toy sales , craft , gift items ,street dancing and music. The largest Grand Market takes place in Kingston. Grand Market is held all over the island in different areas.
I have only been to Grand Market once. It's not very fun, there isn't much to do but walk and eat food. It's very crowded but I guess why people enjoy it so much is because it's there tradition and what everyone looks toward like The Taste Of The Danforth.
Nine-Nights
Nine-nights is a funerary tradition in the Caribbean primarily in Jamaica with roots of African traditions. During this time both family and friends come to the home of the person that is deceased. In the old days these nights were calm and revered for the most part, now a days these gatherings have changed more into parties than its old traditional ways. During the ninth day before the church service ..."it is believed that spirt of the deceased passes though the party gathering food and saying goodbye before continuing on its resting place". Stories are shared about dead person along with prayers.I have only been to 3 times it just like what I said in the description. But its more non-traditional. If you're ever in Jamaica you probably not know what you are at if someone doesn't explain it to you. I didn't know what I was at the first time.
Carnival
The festival began in 1990's, it was inspired by the experience that Lee a creator had in the Trinidad Carnival. this festival lasts for a week they have parades, street dances and colourful floats. on the last day people dress up and go to downtown Jamaica national stadium.I haven't been to carnival in Jamaica but it seems very fun and maybe a good experience for both my family and I.
Junkonoo/John canoe
Jamaicans celebrate this during the Christmas season. Both men and woman dress up in scary costumes and parade in the street. This festival represents the slaves freedom, it isn't popular in cities. its popular in rural Jamaica.I haven't been to this festival anytime while I was ever in Jamaica. I guess that's because when I go to Jamaica im in cites during the time that im there. I think the next time that im in Jamaica during the Christmas going to ask my parents if they could take there to experience it.
